In an email to staff and students, the University of Tasmania has issued a general security alert during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
“The University of Tasmania has been made aware of a threat to the safety of students and staff and is working with Tasmania Police. The threat is general in nature and is not a direct or specific threat to any particular campus.” said Vice-Chancellor Peter Rathjen.
The email, sent at 1:20am, said there will be an increased security presence on and around campus tonight and Tasmania Police will be in and around campus tomorrow.
“All campuses will remain open, however those students or staff who would prefer not to attend campus will not be disadvantaged.” said Vice-Chancellor Rathjen.
The security alert comes less than 24 hours after an anonymous threat on 4chan prompted a lockdown at the University of New South Wales.
The University of Tasmania said they will provide email updates as early as possible.
We will update this post with more information when it becomes available.
UPDATE 9:58 AM:
Investigations are still underway, but it is confirmed that the threat was posted on the social media site 4chan. Students are reminded that if they wish to stay home today, they will not be disadvantaged.
