There are no cons to attending a con!

From Comic Con to Supernova, Vidcon to Vidinc, E3 to EB expo. You’ve heard the words, but what exactly are conventions and why are they so popular?

Contrary to popular belief, these types of conventions are not all just about comics. Don’t get me wrong, most of them do incorporate them and their characters in some way, but they are so much more!

Conventions often fall in to different genres and sub genres to cater to separate audiences. These genres include pop culture, electronics, online video and even hair and beauty. There really is something for everyone!

Most often you will see pop culture conventions incorporating anything from anime to video gaming and cosplay. Electronics showcase the latest in technology while (my favourite) online video will comprise a variety of online media platforms including YouTube, Vine etc.

But the age old question is; “why would I spend $200 plus additional travel expenses on a con when I could attend some awesome festival like ‘Future’, chill out at some estranged venue with nothing but a stage and some friends and listen to some rockin’ tunes for the same price?”

Well my friends, I will answer that with a list of benefits for you.

The schedules of these events are designed to be full of awesomeness, your mind may physically explode!

Not only is there an abundance of interactivity, such as live performances, keynotes, panels, workshops, etc. But there are also a wide range of opportunities to connect with other like-minded individuals, industry professionals and a chance hang out with your favourite stars.

Even Tasmania is in on the action with the 10th annual Anime Island Convention (www.aicon.org.au), a pop culture convention to be held this weekend (March 21 -22) at the Wrest Point Casino Convention Centre.

This years’ theme is “AICon in Space” with special guests: Steven “Bajo” O’Donnell and Stephanie “Hex” Bendixsen from the popular ABC video game series ‘Good Game’ as well as online rapper/Lolita fashion enthusiast MC Melody Doll.

So come along, check out your first or return con and have some fun.

Our editor Michelle and I will also be covering the event and taking photos so make sure you come and say hi!
