The campaign is over, and the results have been announced with Sharifah Syed Rohan elected as the 2019 Tasmania University Union (TUU) President.

Just over 850 University of Tasmania students cast at least one vote in the elections, around 2.5 per cent of the whole student body.

The elections were held online in a bid to increase voter engagement. Around 200 more people voted this year compared to last year’s elections.

Sharifah will be joined by Matthew Clark, who won the battle for the new position of Deputy President.

Incumbent Morgan Read missed out on being elected for a second term as Societies President against Gabrielle Carswell.

“Thank you everyone for the fantastic year. I wish Gabrielle all the best and hope she serves you well,” Morgan told supporters on Facebook.

Current SRC South Postgraduate Representative Alex Guibord defeated Michael Tarbath by just 15 votes to claim victory in the vote for Sports President.

The Elevate ticket, led by Sharifah, will hold 12 out of the 27 positions in the 2019 TUU, including six of the eight positions on the State Council.

Sharifah said she is looking forward to working with all of the elected representatives

“Next year we will be focusing on the work that has happened this year, to ensure student interest is at the heart of what we do,” she said.

“We want to ensure student welfare is placed at the top of the university’s agenda.”

She encouraged students with any concerns or ideas to get in contact with any of the newly elected representatives.

“Our role is to represent them, but we can’t do that without their voice,” she said.

2018 President Jess Robinson said she is excited to see what comes next for the TUU.

“Even though it is a busy time of the year, it is great to see students are still willing to engage in the decisions that impact their experience on campus,” she said.

“I am ecstatic that Sharifah has been elected, and I think the student body should be equally as excited to see what she can do in 2019.”

Jess Robinson’s term as President finishes in less than two months, with the handover and inductions to take place in November.

By-elections to fill the nine vacant positions may be held early next year.
